This incredible instrument deserves to be better known
Can you write anything of any meaning in just 5 minutes? Particularly for an instrument you've never experienced before. That's what Zoë Marlew and myself tested in this episode when we met up with Mantawoman (aka Reylon Yount) who plays the Chinese Hammered Dulcimer called the Yangqin. And we had a lot of fun!

Is Einaudi’s music actually good?

Ludovico Einaudi is a composer I’ve always struggled to get along with. But he’s one of the most popular classical composers alive today. In this video I challenge myself to get to know his music better and see if I can come to some kind of understanding as to what it is I’m missing that so many other people enjoy in it. What is Classical Vaporwave?
Переглядів 381 тис.7 місяців тому
Vaporwave is a form of electronic music and internet culture that emerged in the 2010s. It generally involves stealing old tracks and slowing them down to create something weirdly nostalgic. So making a classical version it seems like a strange thing to do - but that's why I did, with the help of Daniel Hope and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. My failing composing career and what turned it around

What do you do when your dreams of becoming an artist aren't working out? In this very personal video I take a look the role luck played in turning my career round, and how, on reflection it wasn't actually luck at all, but something much more important. I tried to uses royalty free music for this, but wasn't happy with the feel, so I won't be getting any ad revenue for this one. If you'd like ...

I’d like to make maybe a bold claim that E-minor doesn't express sorrow, per se. If anyone has seen the death-metal mockumentary, Spinal Tap, the metal-composer at one point sits at the piano and explains that D-minor is actually the "saddest of all keys. Makes people weep instantly." I associate the D-note with orange. Aways have. And if one thinks of it's inverse--d-MAJOR as happy (take Hayden's "Sunrise Symphony in D-major," ) then it begins to confirm all of those depressing pop and rock songs written in D-MINOR (George Micheal's "Careless Whisper, Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black," etc.). Even Baillergeon's example of the Shostakovich Concerto no. 2 goes specifically (and hamonically) into the D-minor, being that that D-minor is the relative minor of F. D-minor as a literal vibration of sorrow is not a coincidence. That's just the way it is. // But, back to the Elgar piece here in E-minor. That key, E-minor, which to me is yellow (and triangular--the light of Christ, if you will), a key more about a heavy burden, or a stark realization. Take Chopin's Prelude in E-minor. No "subjectivity" there. Clearly the prelude is not about sorrow but rather, drudgery and toil. It's almost like pain that one simply must endure to simply go on. The narrator at 10:54 even says himself that "playing the cello this high gives it a strained, pained quality." Pain is not sorrow, it is simply pain, whether emotional anguish/tension or physical pain. It's not accurate to call the Elgar Concerto "sad," It really is more about pain. Instead of finishing with this concerto being the "most heart-breaking of all time," he can simply change it to "The most BACK-breaking concerto of all times." (Incidentally, i do agree with Mr. David Bruce that the cello could be the saddest instrument (i.e. the musical instrument most prone to sadness) because if the violin is the closest to the human voice in character and expression, then only cello can take those notes deep down to the depths of despair.). Cheers, from Bent, New Mexico at: The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_

Oftentimes I hear fuzz pedal demos and the players often play rock or blues. I don't always hear heavy metal riffs, RnB, hip hop, or pop guitar lines on fuzz guitar. Much of the most popular fuzz guitar lines come from the mid-late 1960s.
